This leather
loveseats back panel corner was bent back and torn. We will
need to remove part of the back and raise it towards the top
to eliminate the tear.
About half of the bottom
back panel staples will need to be removed. Either use a
smaller standard screw driver to remove the staples or a
staple puller. The side of the back panel will also need to
be removed. The side is attached with tackstrip as it is a
finished edge. The leather is rolled under the tackstrip.
Also use a standard screw driver to pry up the tackstrip.
Next, remove the tackstrip
from the side back panel. Be careful not to bend the metal
too much as you will need to reuse. Take note on how the
tackstrip is installed because you will be reinstalling.
You will need to remove
just enough staples on the top to be able to pull the
leather enough hide the tear.
Next fold leather over and
check to be sure the tear is no longer visible. If the tear
is not visible go ahead and staple under the fold to secure.
Straiten the tack strip
that was removed earlier and also straiten the tacks so they
are all facing strait up.
Now reinstall the
tackstrip. You will not be able to reuse the same holes as
we had to pull the leather up towards the top to eliminate
the tear. But use the old holes as a guide when
reinstalling.
Now that you have the
tackstrip reinstalled make sure all looks good down the side
of the loveseat. Tip: before hammering the side panel down
bend the tackstrip slightly down towards the frame about 3-4
inches from the top and the bottom, doing this will allow
for tacks that may not grab real well.
If you have a small piece
of leather, glue a chunk to the hammer head to protect the
leather. Starting from the top gently hammer (keep leather
tight with opposite hand) the tackstrip down a little at a
time. Continue all the way down.
Finish stapling the bottom
of the loveseat and there you have it. No more ugly tear.
