The Best Countertop Cleaners

Different Countertop Materials Need Different Countertop Cleaners

Just as not all countertop materials are alike, so not all countertop cleaners are alike. You need to know what material your countertops are made out of in order to find the correct cleansers for them. Each material has differing needs and quirks. Not only do you have to deal with stains and spills, but also with scratches and scuffs. You can also avoid damaging your countertops with some preventative actions.

Laminate

This is the most popular countertop material to be found just about anywhere. It’s inexpensive, relatively light weight, scratch resistant and one of easiest to clean. Just about any cleansing product for surfaces can be used as laminate countertop cleaners. It’s recommended that you try to use countertop cleaners that are as mildly abrasive as possible. You also do not want to wax laminate countertops.

Glass

Glass countertops go through cycles of being popular. However, they are incredibly difficult to keep clean. Any fingerprint or smudge seems to magnify with glass. They also can scratch easily. Any time you clean your glass countertop – or even if water spills on it – you need to towel it dry or it will leave unsightly watermarks. Use a very mild countertop cleaner like Soft Scrub and rinse with water afterwards, then towel dry.

Stainless Steel

Many professional kitchens and restaurants use stainless steel countertops. They are heat resistant, but try to use hot plates when you can. There are two kinds of finishes – bruised and smooth. The smooth tends to show fingerprints and watermarks more than the bruised. Stainless steel countertop cleaners should be as mild as possible, even just baking soda diluted in hot water.

Many stainless steel countertops — bruised or smooth – develop a grain, similar to wood grain. When you use your countertop cleansers on such a grained stainless steel surface, rub in the direction of the grain. This will keep the countertops from looking worn out, as well as keeping them clean and sanitary.

Granite

The trendy countertop material nowadays seems to be granite. This is solid rock and is trickier to maintain than any of the materials so far discussed. You can’t use harsh scrubbing sponges or countertop cleaners on granite. Even acidic foods like citrus fruits or vinegar can leave permanent stains, so clean as soon as you realize they have contact with your countertops. You cannot rely on ordinary countertop cleaners. You have to use only cleansers made specifically for stone.

by Jerry Blackburn

If your basement is leaking then you can possibly resolve the problem by applying waterproof masonry sealer. This is available from your local hardware store, it comes in powder form and is mixed with water. When this is applied to the wall it will act as a barrier.

Before applying the solution it is very important that you thoroughly clean the area. After you have mixed the sealant follow the instructions exactly.

You can use masonry sealers to fill any cracks and holes in your walls. This is very easy to do, once it’s mixed just cover the holes with the masonry mix. It is very important to fill any holes before you start painting or decorating.

There are a number of useful tools when you are doing any project around your home, including wired brushes, sponges, paint thinners, cement, sand, and trowel.

If your aim is to protect brick work and concrete walls then simply coating them in Masonry paint may be enough, this will prevent the walls from leaking. Before applying any paint you must make sure the walls are cleaned. You should use a wired brush to clean the walls, and then move onto using a drill with a wired wheel on the end. Once you have prepared the walls you should paint the walls with a primer before you paint your top coat. This will help the top coat to last much longer and also create a smooth finish.

These small projects can improve your home and help to protect it from hash weather conditions. When you are repairing your home you should plan enough time to do it so that it gets done properly. Restoring homes is an important way to make your life more comfortable.

All of these improvement projects will increase the value of your home, in the very least they will make your house much more desirable to people that take a look around.

Lots of people don’t bother to look after their home correctly because they think it will be very expensive. Many home owners may take out a second loan in order to improve their home, this isn’t the best idea as it can create a spiral of debt. In fact you don’t actually need to spend huge sums of money, sometimes these projects are so small they will only take a little of your time and a few dollars. There are expensive projects, but these are normally limited to the kitchen and bathroom.

Expensive parts are defiantly cheaper than letting your basement leak. Almost all of these projects can be done by yourself without any expert help or guidance. Even if you wanted to install a shower you can do so for less than five hundred dollars, plus they are very easy to install. They come with user manuals which are aimed at home owners rather than professionals.

Landscaping Ideas

June 3rd, 2008

Introduction

Landscaping is a way of beautifying your home and maintaining as much of its natural beauty and structure as possible. Today, landscaping is considered both an art and a science that stands on good observation and creative designing practices. Front yard landscaping is often the most tried form of landscaping because everyone tends to focus primarily on the look of a homes front yard.

Landscaping

Landscaping ideas in relationship to the home can extend and enhance architectural forms. Landscaping ideas gathered from other sources are good for inspiring one’s mind and helps in your landscaping design. Landscaping on your own can be back breaking work, especially if the initial project requires a lot of digging, but maintaining the appearance can be easier if done regularly. Often times, you as a home owner can choose the landscaping to meet your style much the same as you choose the colors and furnishings in your home.

Plants

Plants are a must to use in any plan of landscaping around a yard or garden that aims at beautifying the place. When choosing plants for your project, be very careful not to choose anything that will grow wildly out of control as this creates more work later down the road. One thing to keep in mind when selecting the plants for your yard or garden is to choose plants that will provide interest in all four seasons. A well selected group of plants will include flowering shrubs and trees during the summer months, foliage during the fall and good structure throughout the winter. Tall trees, shrubs and evergreens should be in the back, and continue to plant two more rows based on the height of the plants. Landscaping ideas yards with plants is also a cheaper alternative than adding water fixtures and other stone structures. Plants also require less time to get your desired results.

Yard

When it comes to creating outdoor living space or decorating the yard there is really no such thing as a small project. Even landscaping small yards can be back breaking work as presenting special challenges that may not be obvious in larger yards. One of the bigger challenges in landscaping small yards is planning ahead and knowing what anything planted to day will grow into, insuring that a few years later it does not take over the entire yard. You can build raised flowerbeds in small yards to attract attention without taking up a lot of space. It may surprise you to know that the colors of the flowers you choose can affect the space in your yard. If you want to give your yard a fresh new look every season, consider landscaping designs that includes seasonal shrubs and trees. Homeowners considering planning to update their yard can easily find landscaping pictures of homes that are of the same size and shape of their own and begin to dream about turning their home into the next magazine cover.

Trees

Depending on the layout of the yard, and how the house is situated on your land, the use of trees may be limited. Proper use of trees, shrubs, vines and man-made structures can modify the climate around your home to reduce heat gains in summer and heat losses in winter. Plant shade trees based on their mature height so they will be properly spaced and provide desired shade. After planting your trees, shrubs and palms, you need to provide them with nourishment.

Conclusion

Again, landscaping ideas can be back breaking work but when you have reached your desired conclusion there may not be a more gratifying project. A nicely done landscaped yard and garden will automatically add value to your home. Good luck on your new project!

How to build a simple birdhouse

May 19th, 2008

Building a birdhouse is a great project to do with the kids.
This project is constructed out of 1×6 cedar fencing material.Materials:
1. 1×6 cedar fencing material that is 5′ long.
2. 1-1/2 finishing nails or deck screws which ever you prefer.
3. All weather wood glue.
4. 4″ wood dowel 3/8″ diameter.

Step 1: Cut 2 side panels that are 6″ high by 5-1/2″ wide.

Step 2: Cut front panel that is 8-3/4″ high by 5-1/2″ wide.
Now mark from the bottom up 6″ on each side of the front panel. (Mark with pencil 6″ up panel on each side) Now at the top of the panel measure in 2-3/4″ and make a mark. This is the center point for the birdhouse peak. Now draw a solid line from each 6″ mark on each side up to the center mark then cut.

Step 3. Use the front wall as a template to make the back wall.

Step 4. Now we need to make the birdhouse access hole and hole for the wood dowel. With the front wall laying flat measure and mark up 2″ from the bottom on each side, then find the center between those two marks, this will be the dowel hole. Drill a 3/8 diameter hole but don’t install the dowel yet.
Now measure up 4-1/2″ from the bottom of the front wall panel on each side then find the center point of these two marks. This is the birdhouse access hole. Drill a 1-1/2″ access hole.

Step 5. Assemble both side walls to the front and back walls using wood glue and three finish nails per joint.

Step 6. Cut right roof panel 9″ long by 5-1/2″ wide. Cut left roof panel 9″ long and 4-3/4″ wide. Don’t install the roof panels yet.

Step 7. Take the left over material lay flat on bench put birdhouse on top of material standing upright. Make marks through the top with your pencil the outline of the floor panel. Once complete install floor panel with glue and nails.

Step 8. Install roof panels. Right roof panel (larger one) will overlap the left roof panel to create the peak. There should be approx. 1″ of overhang in front and back. Glue and nail.

Step 9. Install wood dowel with a small amount of wood glue.

Your done. Paint if you like or let the cedar weather naturally.

Toyota Prius Good and Bad

May 19th, 2008

We recently purchased a Toyota Prius about 6 months ago. So far I have been very happy with the car.Good
1. Save tons of money on fuel. 40-45 miles to gallon on average. Goes up to 50 during summer months and down to 35-40 during winter months.
2. Definitely changes driving habits. I previously owned a Ford Expedition and it was peddle to the metal. With the prius on board fuel consumption readout you can’t help but want to see how good of mileage you can get by the way you drive. I don’t drive 75 down the freeway any longer.
3. Actually has ample room for 4 adults.
4. Tracks very well in wet freeway conditions. Don’t have any problems with hydroplaning so far.

Bad
1. Annoying back up beeper that is just heard inside the car. There is a way to shut this off but havn’t looked into it yet.
2. We recently drove through a snow storm driving home. We live on a slight incline (road). As soon as the tires started loosing tractions the engine shuts down. Its suppose to be a safety feature but being stuck in the middle of the road doesn’t sound very safe to me. My parents also own a prius and live on a fairly steep incline and ended up pushing the car up the hill because of the shut down. I think this should be a recall.

Overall I am very happy with the Prius. But am glad I don’t live in the snow belt!!

Building a Shop

May 19th, 2008

I have been building a woodworking shop for the past year and a half, actually the building is a 26×36 detached double car garage. It started out as a garage but decided to use are existing garage for the cars and use the new building for my workshop/workout room.
I have done all the work myself and am paying as I go, this is why I am still working on it after a year and half.
I dug for footings using my Dad’s Kubota Tractor which was a life saver. One side of the shop was dug into a slop so I had to dig down about 6′. I had standard footings with 2′ stem walls except for the sloped side which had 5′ stem walls.
I framed all walls and added T-111 to the back and one side and am now installing lap siding to front and remaining side.
I did purchase engineered trusses and sheeted them with 7/16 osb sheeting. I purchased architectural roofing that was rated as seconds for $25 a square which is usally $45 a square. I can’t tell any difference.
The back end (12×26) is going to be my weight room and rec room (Man Room!!)
I still have to finish the lap siding and wire it up but hope to finish this summer of 08 if funds permit. Its been a great experience and have saved lots of money by doing it myself.

How to pick out Furniture

May 19th, 2008

Picking out furniture can be a daunting task.
When it comes to picking out leather furniture here is a secret to know when the salesmen is telling the truth about the product being all leather or leather mate. (leather mate is leather where you touch and vinyl everywhere else.)
Whether its a recliner, sofa or loveseat almost all the time if there is a seam on the backside it is all leather. If there is no seam on the backside for example on the back of the sofa if its covered with one solid piece of material it is vinyl. Don’t let the salesman tell you otherwise. I have seen however some companies will put seams in the vinyl to make it look more like leather. If you can find a raw edge underneath the item its pretty obvious whether its leather or not.
I am in the furniture business and one of the most frequently asked questions is is that dining table solid wood?? Its becoming more rare to have solid wood tables anymore, infact your more expensive table are veneered. A tell tell sign is look at the grain of the wood, does it continue over the edge? Most the time it will run the other way on the edge. This is veneer. If a table is pretty ornate its veneer. Actually you cheaper smaller dining nook sets are more likely to be solid than the bigger expensive sets.
I hate to say this but probably 90% of the dining sets you see in retail stores come from overseas! Its amazing how we can ship supplies over there have it built then ship it back and be cheaper than if we just made it over here!! Don’t get me going on this subject!
Bedroom furniture is the same way as far as determining whether its a veneered product or not.
Good luck with your next purchase.
